Former Arkansas guard Anthony Black is off to the pros. On Thursday, he was selected No. 6 overall by the Orlando Magic and will begin his pro hoops career alongside a young and growing core. As for his first official NBA contract, it’s a standard-issue deal for the sixth overall pick, which the folks at Spotrac projected once he got drafted. Here were those numbers:

  • ’23-’24: $7.2M
  • ’24-’25: $7.6M
  • ’25-’26: $7.9M
  • ’26-’27: $10.1M

In all, that adds up to a 4 year, $32.9 million contract that Black is likely to sign for — or a figure very close to that. Of course, it’s great money, but that bump up from the seven million range to more than 10 in year four is quite the nice little raise. Black just has to make sure he doesn’t get cut before then, which we can assume is a pretty unlikely possibility given his talents on the basketball court.

More on Anthony Black

While the ’23 Arkansas team ended up making another run to the second weekend like the ’22 and ’21 teams, this year’s group suffered far more ups and downs and weren’t nearly as consistent in the regular season. However, one of the few consistent contributors who actually remained healthy was Anthony Black.

He took over point guard duties for the most part, was the team’s second-leading scorer and also its best perimeter defender. This Hogs team was always flawed — it lacked guards even before Smith went down, and Eric Musselman just had to play Davonte Davis and Anthony Black every minute he could. Those two each averaged more than 35 minutes per game this year, with Black leading the way by a smidge.

He may have been a freshman but Anthony Black really held that Arkansas team together as a freak athlete with a guard’s game in a forward’s body. He’ll be a factor for a very long time at the pro level, whether it’s with Orlando or any other place in the NBA. There’s a spot for a kid of his unique talent somewhere.

Prior to joining Eric Musselman and the Hogs, Black attended Coppell High School in Duncanville, Texas before moving to Duncanville High School for his senior season.

He was a consensus five-star prospect and in the top 20 on all major recruiting sites. Black was the No. 15 overall prospect in the nation in the 2022 signing class, according to the On3 Consensus, and the No. 2 recruit out of the Lone Star State, behind only fellow draftee Cason Wallace.
