LOOK: Former Alabama receiver Gehrig Dieter announces retirement from football
Five years after entering the NFL, Gehrig Dieter has decided to hang up the laces and retire from the NFL. Dieter announced his decision via Twitter, posting multiple photos from his time in Kansas City, where he spent his entire career.
Throughout his five seasons with the Chiefs, Dieter had two receptions for 32 yards but was not able to find the endzone. He joined the squad as an undrafted free agent after the 2017 NFL Draft and spent most of his time on the practice squad. While Kansas City did actively move him between there and the active roster, when Dieter was on the field, most of his time was spent on special teams.
Prior to the NFL, Dieter played college football at three different schools, with Alabama being his final destination. He was a key member of the Crimson Tide receiving core that went on to play in the College Football Playoff national championship. Dieter had 15 receptions for 214 yards and four touchdowns during his time in Tuscaloosa.
Dieter is a native of South Bend, IN, and was ranked a three-star prospect coming out of high school by the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. Kansas was the only Power Five program to offer the wide receiver before he ultimately decided on SMU.
After just one year in the Park Cities, Dieter transferred to Bowling Green. However, since the transfer portal was not around back then, he sat out the 2013 season before spending two years with the Falcons. He caught 129 passes for 1,493 yards and 11 touchdowns before ultimately making another transfer to Alabama.
Dieter will now get to enjoy his post-football life after a solid college career and spending five seasons in the NFL.
