Former New York Jets running back Ty Johnson revealed on Instagram that the Jets cut him after team doctors recommended he have surgery to repair a torn pec.

Johnson was cut by the Jets on April 26 via a non-football injury designation.

“Went to New York,” Johnson said in a video recorded Saturday from a cold tub. “I told them even before reporting, I was like: ‘hey, was working out, this what happened.’ Saw the team doctor, he was like, ‘you need to get it fixed.’ Flew out the next day. Come back happy that I got it done — even though I didn’t want to get it done. That following Wednesday, ya outta there. I was like, damn. But at the end of the day, I know I’m gonna be alright. I know God got my back. Just keep going forward.”

Ty Johnson had re-signed with New York in March. He first arrived with the team in October 2020 after being claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

The Lions had selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Ty Johnson had been with the New York Jets since 2020

The 25-year-old former Maryland running back rushed the ball 30 times in 2022 for 160 yards for a 5.3 yards per carry average. He also snagged 12 receptions out of the backfield for 88 yards.

He started three games during the 2021 season, which was also statistically his best campaign. Johnson rushed for 238 yards and added another 372 yards in the air.

The caption for his cold tube video was the following: “Run Your Race At Your Pace. The end goal isn’t Be All, End All. It’s the continuous desire to grow everyday. Everything happens for you. Show the Gratitude for the life you live, the life that you have. It can always be worse and anything I’ve learned from this recovery process is the unwavering belief in myself and my ability’s.”

There are now five running backs on the Jets roster: Israel Abanikanda, Michael Carter, Travis Dye, Breece Hall and Zonovan Knight. Carter has the most NFL experience of that group as this upcoming season will be his third in the NFL.

Abanikanda and Dye are both rookies. An All-American running back out of Pitt, Abanikanda was selected in the fifth round by the Jets. Dye was an undrafted free agent.

Despite playing in only seven games due to an injury, Hall lead the Jets in rushing yards as a rookie last year.
