Gradey Dick‘s outfit at the 2023 NBA Draft created buzz nationwide. However, the most valuable opinions on the topic were yet to be heard: his former teammates.

On a recent episode of “Rock Chalk Unplugged,” former teammates Mitch Lightfoot and Chris Teahan, along with new Jayhawk Hunter Dickinson, discussed Dick’s sparkly red suit. Each of them had their own take on the flamboyant look.

“I know Gradey pretty well,” Teahean said. “I know it was like a half-joke, half-seriousness, so like I was kind of like, ‘OK, that’s funny.’ But, if he was being completely serious about it and then him saying all the Dorothy from Kansas stuff… I thought it was hilarious.”

For those unaware, Dick claimed Dorothy’s red slippers inspired his draft-night fit in the “Wizard of Oz.” The lottery pick grew up in Wichita, Kan., the same land Dorothy hails from in the iconic film.

Evidently, the glamorous look caught some teams’ eyes. The Toronto Raptors selected Dick with the No. 13 overall pick. Although Dick’s outfit was unusual, his former teammate had to give him props.

“There’s absolutely no way in hell I’d ever be seen like that,” Lightfoot said. “He’s got to have so much confidence to wear that. That is one of the better fits I’ve seen at draft night.”

While Dickinson never played with Dick, he was also happy for him.

“You got to have some confidence to wear that,” the Michigan transfer said. “He’s somebody who doesn’t lack confidence at all. But the suit and the color of the suit could not have matched the team any more perfectly. It was like picture perfect that he was going to the Raptors, and so happy for him, and I feel like that’s a good fit for him there.”

The 7-foot-1 All-American also admitted his draft night fit might not be modest, either, if he was drafted in the lottery.

“If I’m Gradey Dick and I’m going to be a top 15 pick, you can show up in whatever. Don’t let me be a top 15 pick, I’m going to be showing up in something crazy,” Dickinson joked.

The three-time All-Big Ten selection will undoubtedly have NBA eyes on him this season. Dickinson transferred to Kansas in May after a cycle of grueling recruiting in the portal. After averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last season at Michigan, Dickinson will be a significant contributor at Kansas.
