Former Ole Miss and NFL player, Jerrell Powe avoided a serious criminal charge after being arrested in 2023, as a Mississippi grand jury declined to issue an indictment, his lawyer told The Associated Press recently. Powe was facing possible kidnapping charges.

Powe’s attorney, Tom Fortner, recently told The AP that the Madison County district attorney had informed him the impaneled grand jury opted not to issue an indictment. Grand jury proceedings are private.

Powe and another person were originally arrested in Ridgeland, Mississippi, in 2023 after a man alleged he had been taken from a town about 75 miles away.

Powe was a defensive tackle at Ole Miss from 2008 to 2010 and played 37 career games. He had 69 tackles, seven sacks and one interception in that time, earning second-team All-SEC honors his final two years with the Rebels in 2009 and 2010.

After being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Powe played in 12 games across three seasons before playing 16 games for the Houston Texans in 2014.

Two people have been charged in the Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting

Two men have been charged with murder for the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade last Wednesday. The shooting left 22 people injured and one woman dead.

“Both adults are charged with second-degree murder and other charges,” according to the Associated Press. “They have been hospitalized since the shooting, Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said during a news conference.

“The new charges come after two juveniles were detained last week on gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Authorities said more charges are possible. Police have said a dispute among several people led to the shooting, which happened even as 800 police officers patrolled the celebration.”

Per the Kansas City Star, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said on Tuesday, that Lyndell Mays and Dominic M. Miller each face a felony murder charge for their actions.

“Prior to the shooting, Mays was in a verbal argument with another person that he had no prior history or connection with. That argument quickly escalated and Mays drew a handgun, Baker said… Almost immediately, others, including Miller, pulled their firearms.

“Mays and Miller each have also been charged with two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. They each are being held on $1 million bond.”
