The Seattle Seahawks have made a massive decision ahead of the start of NFL free agency. On Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Seahawks have signed former Texas Longhorns safety Quandre Diggs to a massive new contract.

“The #Seahawks have agreed to terms with one of theirs: Safety Quandre Diggs gets a 3-year deal worth $40M, source said,” Rapoport tweeted on Monday. “Seattle retains a key defender.”

Diggs has been a key part of the Seahawks secondary for the past couple of seasons. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of the previous two years, his first two full years with Seattle. In four college seasons at Texas, Diggs totaled 220 tackles with 14 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, and 27 passes defended.

The Detroit Lions first selected Diggs in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He then played 65 games over five seasons for the Lions, totaling 215 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, six interceptions, 24 passes defended, and three forced fumbles. The Lions signed Diggs to a three-year, $20.4 million contract extension in September of 2018. Five games into the 2019 season, Detroit traded him to Seattle.

Diggs has become a valuable piece of the Seahawks defense

In parts of three seasons with the Seahawks, Diggs has played in 38 games. In that time, he has 158 tackles, 13 interceptions, 20 passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

The Seahawks are going to look drastically different next season. Russell Wilson is now with the Denver Broncos, and Bobby Wagner has been released. Another key part of the Seattle secondary is set to hit the open market as well, as Sidney Jones is an unrestricted free agent.

By locking up Diggs long-term, the Seahawks have solidified the safety position. Diggs is now under contract until 25, and fellow starting safety Jamal Adams is under contract through 2026. Defensive back D.J. Reed is also set to hit the open market, and the Seahawks would like to bring him back if at all possible.
