Former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Pat White joins Chargers coaching staff
Former West Virginia Mountaineers star quarterback Pat White has a new role in the NFL. According to recent information released by the team, White has accepted a position with the Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff as an assistant coach.
He joins the coaching ranks after spending last training camp with the Chargers as a part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship.
White was the number 44 overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. The two-time Big East offensive player of the year is yet another star college quarterback who was also drafted to the MLB. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected White in the fourth round of the 2004 MLB Draft. However, he never played baseball professionally.
At West Virginia, White was ahead of his time as a dual-threat quarterback. With White as the starter, the Mountaineers had three straight seasons of 11 or more wins and went 4-0 in their bowl games, including 2-0 in BCS bowl games. He also owns the school record and is second in the NCAA for all-time career rushing yards by a quarterback.
Although White’s first go-around in the NFL as a quarterback was short-lived, after being knocked unconscious in a preseason game by the Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ike Taylor; the former West Virginia star is looking for a fresh start as a coach. And what better place to do so than in Los Angeles with one of the best young talents at quarterback in the game in Justin Herbert.
West Virginia inducts Geno Smith, Stedman Bailey, and Tavon Austin into football HoF
The West Virginia Mountaineers football program has announced its 2022 Hall of Fame class. The Mountaineers will induct three players into their sports Hall of Fame this year: quarterback Geno Smith, wide receiver Stedman Bailey, and wide receiver/ athlete Tavon Austin.
Smith, Bailey, and Austin made up arguably the most prolific offense in Mountaineers history, led by head coach Dana Holgorsen. The trio ended up leaving the school at the same time, with all three getting picked up in the 2013 NFL Draft.
The trio accounted for arguably one of the most exciting periods in Mountaineer football history. Despite being unsuccessful in bringing a national championship to Morgantown, WV, they helped put West Virginia football back on the map. And they did it while setting some pretty spectacular records along the way in eye-popping fashion.
