There might be some positive news on the Saquon Barkley front. The Giants star running back suffered an injury and needed assistance coming off the field with less than two minutes remaining in the team’s 31-28 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday.

Per a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, X-Rays on Barkley’s ankle were negative. So, there are no broken bones for the star back. But he’s not quite in the clear yet.

Barkley will undergo an MRI on Monday to further evaluate the injury. Currently, the team believes he suffered a sprained ankle.

Barkley had a solid outing in New York’s win on Sunday before leaving the game. He rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The running back added 29 yards on six catches and also caught a touchdown pass.

New York improved to 1-1 on the season following the victory.

Barkley has faced ankle injuries at times throughout his career. In 2019, he missed three games because of a right ankle injury. In 2021, he sat out of four contests because of an issue with his left ankle.

Additionally, Barkley missed nearly all of the 2020 campaign because of an ACL injury suffered in the second week of the season.

The former Penn State standout is playing on a revised franchise tag deal this year. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the NFL season.

Barkley also played in New York’s season opener, a forgettable performance against Dallas. The Cowboys defeated the Giants 40-0. Barkley totaled 51 yards on 12 carries and also caught three passes for 12 yards.

Giants overcome 21-point deficit to defeat Cardinals

New York didn’t make Sunday’s win easy. The Giants trailed the Cardinals 28-7 in the third quarter, needing an epic comeback to get the first victory of the season.

Barkley accounted for two of those late scores to narrow the gap. Then, with 19 seconds remaining, Graham Gano nailed a 34-yard field goal to lift the Giants to a 31-28 win.

Daniel Jones, who threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, said the team remained confident during the deficit.

“We always remained confident,” Jones said, per ESPN. “It was getting back to simple execution: trusting it, seeing it and ripping it. We had some opportunities to make plays in the first half. We didn’t do it. I knew they’d be there. I just had to execute and give our guys a chance to make those plays. We did it and built on that.”

The Giants travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers on Thursday.
