New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones underwent further evaluation for the neck injury he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. After scans on Monday, head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that he’s “optimistic” that Jones could start in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.

The starting QB suffered a neck contusion in the 31-16 loss that was reminiscent of a similar injury he suffered in 2021.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s tough to say for sure,” Jones said after the game. “Certainly dealt with a similar issue. So I’ll meet with the doctors and trainers and go from there. I think they’re all different, so I don’t know exactly what it is yet. So I’ll know more tomorrow.”

After his initial x-ray, Jones told the media he was feeling the pain but overall was “fine.”

“I feel fine,” Jones said. “I think I’m certainly in some pain; physical game.”

Giants struggle to protect Jones

The Giants offensive line has had an exceptionally hard time keeping their quarterback clean in the pocket this season. Jones has taken 28 sacks over five weeks, including six against the Dolphins. Last week, he had a whopping 10 sacks against him.

“Affecting the quarterback plays an important role in the game,” Brian Daboll said after the game, “and we’ve got to figure out a way to protect him better.”

With Jones out, the Giants went with backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who completed nine of 12 passes for 86 yards. He also took one sack.

The New York Giants are now 1-4 on the year after preseason projections had them as a potential rival to the Eagles in the NFC East. On Sunday, Jones went 14-for-20 for 119 yards and no scores. He also added 24 yards on four rushes.

For the season, the former Duke star has 884 passing yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has 197 rushing yards and another score on the ground.

On Sunday, the Giants desperately missed the presence of running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley missed his third consecutive game with an ankle injury. Matt Breida started in place of the star running back and ran for 21 yards on nine carries. Rookie Eric Gray had the first 12 rushing attempts of his career and gained a team-high of 25 yards. Leading the Giants in yards on Sunday was tight end Darren Waller. He had 86 yards on eight receptions.
