The No. 12 seed Vanderbilt Commodores will look to take down the No. 5 seed Baylor Bears in their first round matchup in the 2024 Women’s NCAA Tournament. The 12-5 matchup is always a popular upset pick and with good reason. The matchup is usually pretty even. Vanderbilt comes into the game with a 23-9 overall record.

The 12th seeded Commodores squeaked past Columbia 72-68 in their First Four matchup on Wednesday, March 20th. to punch their tickets to Friday’s first-round matchup. Iyana Moore stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the win.

Baylor comes into the matchup with a 24-7 overall record. The Bears finished in a tie for fourth place in the Big 12 Conference with a 12-6 record. They lost to Iowa State 67-62 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. One of Baylor’s most complete players is Dre’Una Edwards, who’s been averaging 12.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

The Baylor Bears are favorites coming into this one and that’s not a surprise since they are the No. 5 seed. Baylor is a 7.5-point favorite in the game, according to FanDuel. The over/under for this one is set at 134.5 points and the money line for Baylor is set at -400.

If history is any indicator, the Bears have that on their side. Since 2021 under their new head coach Nicki Colleen, Baylor has advanced to the second round of the women’s NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. We’ll see if they can make it their third trip in a row to the second round.

Vanderbilt averages 68.5 points per game. Baylor averages 74.8 points per game. The Vandy defense surrenders 61.8 points per game, which should play into the Bears’ hands. Baylor is 22-5 when they score over 62 points in a contest.
