The Indianapolis Colts added some more depth to the running back position, singing running back Trey Sermon to the team’s practice squad according to a report from NFL Insider Field Yates.

Sermon was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 88 pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent one year with the 49ers before being released by the team in 2022, finding a new home with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2022 season.

Injuries have kept Sermon off of the field throughout his NFL career so far, but the former Oklahoma and Ohio State standout still has the potential to be an impactful rusher in the league.

Sermon appeared in nine games for the 49ers in 2021, rushing for 167 yards on 41 carries and a touchdown, also snagging three passes for 26 yards out of the backfield. A Week 12 ankle injury placed him on the injured reserve in December, and although he was activated in January during San Francisco’s playoff run he’d see no action in the playoffs.

He was released on August 31, 2022, by the 49ers and claimed the very next day by the Philadelphia Eagles off waivers. But Sermon would see the field even less for the Eagles appearing in just two games with two carries for 19 yards.

Sermon had an impressive showing in the preseason this year for the Eagles, tallying 30 carries for 105 yards and three touchdowns, also recording six receptions for 49 yards. But it was not enough to remain on Philadelphia’s 53-man roster, as he was waived from the Eagles’ injured reserve last Friday.

The Colts have already used four different running backs through the first two weeks of the season in the absence of star rusher Jonathan Taylor, and maybe a healthy Sermon can be eventually promoted to Indy’s 53-man roster and contribute to the rushing attack.

Sermon was a prolific running back in college, spending the first four seasons of his career at Oklahoma followed by one standout season for Ohio State. He rushed for 2,946 yards and 26 touchdowns in his collegiate career, highlighted by an impressive postseason performance for the Buckeyes rushing for 331 yards in the Big Ten Championship game and 193 yards in the College Football Playoff Semifinal.

The Colts are hoping to eventually see that version of Sermon in the blue and white, and it will definitely be interesting to see what this chapter of his career holds moving forward.
