Jalen Hurts exits 49ers-Eagles game due to concussion protocol
Philadelphia Eagles fans saw the last thing they wanted to see on Sunday in the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Jalen Hurts ran to the locker room after going into the blue medical tent as the Eagles trailed the 49ers 28-13. Hurts took a hard hit and was slow to get up, which forced Philadelphia to turn to backup quarterback Marcus Mariota for the first time this season.
The Eagles signed the former Oregon star to a one-year deal in March to provide their star QB a capable backup. Prior to Hurts’ exit, the starter had 196 passing yards and a rushing touchdown.
Luckily for Philadelphia, the starting quarterback was able to return from a potential concussion evaluation to get back on the field with more than seven minutes remaining. Mariota went 2-for-3 for 16 yards before Hurts returned.
49ers linebacker, Eagles security officer ejected
Tempers flared in the third quarter of the Sunday afternoon matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. Those tempers resulted in a rare double ejection between a player and a team personnel member.
49ers star Dre Greenlaw slammed wide receiver DeVonta Smith into the turf, which led to a larger skirmish and Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro putting hands on the former Arkansas standout. The linebacker ended up putting his hand in the face of the Eagles staffer, resulting in the ejection of both player and staffer. DiSandro received a standing ovation as he exited the game with the Eagles trailing their NFC rivals.
The hubbub didn’t end there. After the Eagles drove down the field and scored off of a one-yard rush by quarterback Jalen Hurts, more shoving occurred around the endline.
Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the 49ers offense showed up in the second with 14 points. They tacked on another 14 in the third quarter to go up 28-13. If San Francisco can hold on to the lead, they’ll move to 9-3 on the year while the Eagles would fall to 10-2. Philadelphia has yet to lose at home this season but the 49ers would like to change that.
Losing Greenlaw was a big blow to the heart of the defense. He led the team with seven tackles on the day and entered the game as the team’s second-leading tackler with 79 through 10 games. He also has five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
The 49ers drafted Dre Greenlaw with a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact as a rookie, tallying 92 tackles, a sack and an interception. He signed a two-year, $16.4 million extension with San Francisco last offseason before posting a career-high 127 tackles in the 2022 regular season.
