Report: Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson interviews for Eagles OC job
The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly interviewed Houston Texans quarterback’s coach Jerrod Johnson for the offensive coordinator job, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Texans’ QB coach Jerrod Johnson interviewed for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator job, per source,” Schefter wrote on Twitter.
It’s the latest intriguing name to pop up in the Eagles’ OC search after parting ways with Brian Johnson.
Previously, the Eagles interviewed former Arizona Cardinals head coach and current USC analyst Kliff Kingsbury.
Johnson was integral to the development of Texans rookie quarterback CJ Stroud this season. Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick, led Houston to an AFC South title and a Wild Card playoff victory over the Cleveland Browns this year.
Under, partly, Johnson’s coaching, Stroud finished his rookie year with 4,018 yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 63.9% completion percentage.
Johnson is a former Texas A&M quarterback who went undrafted in 2011 and had numerous preseason and practice squad stints with NFL teams, including the Eagles and other professional leagues. He began his coaching career in 2017 with the San Francisco 49ers with a Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
He did the same in 2019 with the Indianapolis Colts before landing an offensive quality control coaching gig under then-coach Frank Reich. Notably, Johnson was on the same staff as current Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni with the Colts.
In 2022, Johnson was the Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterback coach before going to Houston this past season. Should he go to Philadelphia, Johnson would be the third offensive coordinator in three years.
Shane Steichen left after 2022 to take over the Indianapolis Colts head coaching gig and the Eagles just parted ways with Johnson after one season.
As Philadelphia remakes a bulk of the staff, Johnson could be the piece that comes into command Sirainni’s offense. Sirianni himself faced job speculation following the Eagles’ collapse from 10-1 to first round playoff exit.
Johnson’s big task would be to mold the offense around Jalen Hurts and return him to his MVP candidate form of 2022 when the Eagles made the Super Bowl.
Sirianni is 34-17 in three seasons with the Eagles and has a 2-3 playoff record. He’s led Philadelphia to the playoffs each season of his tenure, including Super Bowl LVII last year.
Philadelphia lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs, putting 2023 as a boom or bust year for the Eagles. 2024 could very well be more of the same, as far as expectations.
