The Dallas Cowboys are back in the unfortunate position of having to start Dak Prescott’s backup. The oft-maligned star quarterback couldn’t even make it through Week 1 of the 2022-23 season healthy. Midway through the fourth quarter of the Cowboys putrid loss to Tampa Bay, Prescott smashed his hand on a Buccaneer defender and was out for the rest of the game.

Afterwards, Prescott was notified he needed to have surgery on his right thumb — that’s right, the one on his throwing hand. So he’s out of the lineup for several weeks now.

Which means: in comes the pride of the Chippewas, Cooper Rush. The former Central Michigan QB is slated to start against the Super Bowl runner-up Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night. And Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is in full support of Rush and believes he can lead the team to victory.

On local radio station 105.3 The Fan, Jones declared his confidence in Rush, saying:

“I think Rush is up to the task of winning ball games for us. He’s certainly had a lot of experience in this offense. He and Kellen Moore have been joined at the hip for a long time. I like who we’re lining up with.”

Expect nary a drop-off with Rush in the driver’s seat Sunday night. With the national spotlight and a Super Bowl contender coming to town, will he be able to take care of business? That’s a tough spot for a backup quarterback in the NFL. But if one thing’s for sure, Jerry Jones has plenty of faith.

The Cowboys and Bengals both dropped their first game of the season. Cincinnati, in bizarre fashion, at home to the Steelers in a game that featured five turnovers from the Bengals and none from Pitt, yet still went to overtime. Meanwhile, the Cowboys struggled mightily against Tampa Bay even with Dak Prescott. His absence meant very little by the time he went out, as Dallas only scored three points and was down by several possessions.
