The Dallas Cowboys made a big statement against the Patriots on Sunday, coming off of their first loss of the year against the Cardinals. Dak Prescott led his squad to a 38-3 Week 4 victory, which was the biggest loss of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s career.

After the win, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones called the experience “surreal.”

“Surreal is what it is when you look at how well they have competed all these years, and so again that is the case where you have all the respect in the world for them,” Jones said.

“Couldn’t have pictured being able to have the score like this, but again, it’s kind of inspiring because again knowing what a great coach, what a great organization they’ve got. We’ll build on that. That did us some good.”

Thanks to some early help from the Cowboys defense, Dallas got off to a lead by capitalizing on mistakes by quarterback Mac Jones. A win on Sunday would have been the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach’s 300th regular season win.

“I would say that we will take it,” Jones added. “We will take it, and it will be that meaningful to us and is that meaningful to us even though we know he’d like to have few things different than they are with that team. It’s still beating them and getting the win from him. It’s got everything that’s good to go with it.”

Belichick was dejected after the game but told reporters he believes his team is better than they showed on Sunday.

“At this point, I think we’re a lot better team than we showed out there tonight, but that’s what we showed and that’s what it was,” Belichick said post-game. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to do a better job, playing, coaching… just got to perform better. There’s really not much to say.”

Patriots bench Mac Jones amid double-digit deficit

The Dallas Cowboys defense did not treat Patriots quarterback Mac Jones nicely on Sunday. Trailing 31-3 before the start of the fourth quarter, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick opted to bench the former first-round draft pick instead of letting the Micah Parsons-led group continue their onslaught.

Jones threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and fumbled another ball, which was also returned for a touchdown, before Belichick moved him to the bench in favor of Bailey Zappe. Jones was 12-for-21 before his exit.

Prior to the Week 4 game, Jones was completing 64.8% of his passes. He was 81-for-125 with 748 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He helped the Patriots clinch their first win of the season last week against the Jets.

The 28-3 deficit to the Cowboys at halftime was a historic mark for Bill Belichick. He led the Patriots to a historic comeback in the Super Bowl against Atlanta while down 28-3, however, the score was only 21-3 at halftime.

Before the game, the Cowboys honored former first-round running back Ezekiel Elliott with a video tribute on the massive display board. Elliott, now with the Patriots, rushed for 16 yards on just six carries in his return to AT&T Stadium.
