The New York Jets could already be exploring options to replace starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers after the former NFL MVP suffered a serious Achilles injury against the Bills on Monday night. Though there are several free-agent options the Jets could explore, another option would be to call teams with attractive backup quarterbacks.

The Dallas Cowboys recently went out on a limb to acquire former first-rounder Trey Lance from the 49ers, and Cooper Rush proved more than competent while filling in for Dak Prescott last season, but it doesn’t sound like Jerry Jones is considering parting ways with either one.

“I can’t imagine what it would be (to make that type of trade),” Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota. “But the facts are, just as they do, we could need Rush in a play. And we did last year. We did the year before.

“Boy, especially when you got all the promise we got, to compromise yourself with the depth at that position would be very unlikely.”

The Cowboys have their own Super Bowl run in mind and aren’t likely to help out an opponent, especially not right before they meet for a game. Dallas hosts the Jets on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium. Previously a three-point spread in favor of the Cowboys, the Las Vegas odds have shifted even more towards Jones’ squad to 7.5 since Rodgers went down on Monday night.

Jones told the radio hosts that he was torn up to see Rodgers suffer such a severe injury.

“I was sick for everybody,” the GM said. “We’re all sick. You don’t want to see that.”

Jets awaiting results on Rodgers MRI

The Jets are still waiting on results from Rodgers’ MRI on Tuesday morning but head coach Robert Saleh is bracing for the worst.

“It’s not good,” Saleh said after the game, via Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

With Rodgers sidelined, New York turned to Zach Wilson, the 2021 second overall pick. Wilson has started 22 games over the past two seasons, throwing for 4,022 yards, 15 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

The Jets benched Wilson this past season after poor play, prompting them to acquire the four-time NFL MVP Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.

On Monday night, Rodgers’ backup was enough to get the job done. Wilson finished 14-for-21 with one touchdown, one interception and 140 passing yards. The Jets managed to snag the win in overtime on a kickoff return touchdown from rookie undrafted free agent Xavier Gipson.
