Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh is set to meet and interview with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday, per Adam Schefter.

After winning a national championship this past season with the Wolverines, Harbaugh is expected to return to the NFL where he previously coached the San Francisco 49ers. This will likely be the first of several interviews.

“A decision is not expected to be imminent for either side,” Schefter wrote. “Harbaugh will be deliberate with any decision he makes about his future. The Chargers still are going a through interview process and have other candidates that they plan to speak with.”

Jim Harbaugh spent four seasons in the NFL, compiling a 44-19-1 record and taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

The interview with Los Angeles was expected. Thanks to quarterback Justin Herbert, Los Angeles is seen as one of the better NFL openings. It was also recently reported by Ian Rapoport that there was mutual interest between both sides.

“His sweepstakes are heating up right now, sources tell me and colleague Tom Pelissero that Harbaugh is set to meet with the Los Angeles Chargers this week. That is his first NFL interview this cycle. Remember over the course of the last couple years he’s met with the Broncos, met with the Vikings,” Rapoport said.

“My understanding is there’s some mutual interest here between Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers. It would make the most sense for him of any of the openings but obviously we will see that’s where he goes or if Michigan continues their fight to keep him. That is something they are trying to do.”

Despite the NFL rumors surrounding Jim Harbaugh, Michigan has made it clear that it wants to retain him and hopes to present him with a contract extension.

Michigan AD Warde Manuel tells championship celebration crowd he’s working on new contract for Jim Harbaugh

While at a celebration for the national championship, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel told the crowd that he was working on a new contract for Jim Harbaugh.

“I will answer the question that I heard about 500 times on the parade route, I am working on getting this man a new contract,” Manuel said.

For as much as Michigan may want to retain the coach who brought the program a national championship, the NFL is certainly going to have interest in Jim Harbaugh and it looks like he is going to have mutual interest with the league.
