Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed Monday that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will “probably” miss the remainder of the 2023 season.

Irsay told Stephen Holder of ESPN it’s likely that Richardson undergoes surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder in the next week or so.

“The most likelihood is he’s probably going to be gone for the year,” Irsay said. “I mean, it’s not definite but [he] probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.”

Irsay added that the final decision as to whether Richardson undergoes surgery will be up to the 21-year-old himself, as well as those advising him.

“There’s debate going, but it’s probably going to lead toward surgery in the next week or so,” Irsay said. “We’re just trying to figure out exactly how and when and what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do.”

Richardson, the 2023 fourth overall pick out of Florida, suffered the AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder in the 23-16 Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans. The Colts placed him on injured reserve this past Wednesday. In four games this season, Richardson threw for 577 yards with three touchdowns and one interception on 59.5% passing. He added 136 yards and four scores on the ground. Richardson missed the Week 3 contest against the Baltimore Ravens with a concussion.

Colts offense moving forward without Anthony Richardson

Gardner Minshew replaced Richardson against Tennessee, completing 11-of-14 passes for 155 yards. Minshew got the start in Week 3 against the Ravens, leading the Colts to a 22-19 overtime victory. With Richardson sidelined for the foreseeable future, it’ll be Minshew’s team moving forward.

Minshew was under center in the 37-20 Week 6 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday. The 27-year-old completed 33-of-55 passes for 329 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Minshew took responsibility for the loss after the game.

“At the end of the day, I was careless with the ball,” Minshew said. “I didn’t do a good enough job taking care of it. I put our team in a really bad spot, you know, and it’s not fair to the rest of the guys, so I’m really going to look at those, hold myself accountable.”
