Joe Burrow says he tweaked calf injury in loss to Ravens
A bad start to the NFL season gets even worse for the Bengals. The 0-2 start is enough to have Cincinnati fans cringing, but star quarterback Joe Burrow revealed that he re-aggravated the calf injury he sustained during training camp in Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Following the game, Burrow said he “tweaked it a little bit,” not a great sign for the star of the franchise. He says he’ll continue to monitor on a daily basis.
“I’m not sure how it’s going to feel the next couple days,” Burrow said, according to ESPN. “It’s pretty sore right now. No telling how it’s going to feel. So, I think we’re going to take it day by day.”
Burrow completed 27-of-41 passes for 222 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The Bengals dropped Sunday’s game to the Ravens 27-24. Cincinnati continues to search for its first victory of the 2023 season.
After the game, Burrow was asked if he believes the calf injury will continue to be an issue throughout the season.
“Whenever you have these kind of things, it’s always ongoing,” he said. “It’s always something that you’re managing.”
Cincinnati did perform better this weekend than in the opener against Cleveland. The Bengals dropped their Week 1 contest to the Browns 24-3. Burrow struggled mightily in that game, completing just 14 of his 31 pass attempts for 82 yards.
Burrow suffered a calf strain early in training camp, essentially sidelining the star during summer practices. While he might feel better than he did, it’s clearly still a lingering issue.
The Bengals host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football in Week 3.
Joe Burrow becomes highest-paid NFL player
Burrow’s 2023 season started off on a pretty good note. The veteran quarterback became the highest-paid player in NFL history just before the start of the year.
“Joe Burrow has reached agreement with the Bengals on an 5-year, $275 million extension that includes $219.01 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
Unfortunately for the Bengals, that has been the lone highlight of the season. The Bengals sit at 0-2 and Burrow continues to battle a calf strain. But there are still 15 weeks remaining in the season, plenty of time to right the ship.
The story of Burrow’s calf will continue to be monitored, especially if Cincinnati fails to pick up its first win in the near future.
