After the Las Vegas Raiders brought in former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick for an in-person workout recently, the top brass of the team have been tight-lipped about what went on. The Raiders outspoken owner Mark Davis had little to say, and so did new Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels. However, at OTA’s on Tuesday, one person had some words on the potential of Kaepernick joining the team, starting quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr received a significant pay raise over the offseason and a contract extension. That was a signal to most of Las Vegas’ confidence in the direction of the franchise with him at the helm. They furthered that vote of confidence when they orchestrated a deal to land Carr’s favorite target in college Davante Adams. And with that level of reassurance, Carr gave an open and honest answer on the team’s potential to sign Kaepernick.

According to ESPN’s NFL reporter Paul Gutierrez, Carr is welcoming to the idea Of the Raiders signing Kaepernick. He also highlighted that he believed there would be little friction between the two quarterbacks saying, “We’d get along great.”

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback hasn’t played in the league since 2016, when he kneeled during the national anthem to protest racial injustice. In six years with the 49ers from 2011 to 2016, Kaepernick totaled more than 12,000 passing yards and 72 touchdowns and helped lead San Francisco to Super Bowl XLVII. As he worked toward his goal to get back to the NFL, Michigan, and coach Jim Harbaugh brought him in to work out during the program’s spring game this year.

Peter King speculates Raiders doing due diligence on Kaepernick for later in the season

The Las Vegas Raiders caught plenty of attention last week when they brought Colin Kaepernick in for a workout. The timing was interesting, especially considering Derek Carr recently signed a lucrative contract extension.

But NBC Sports’ Peter King offered a possible explanation for the workout, and it doesn’t involve Carr’s future at all.

King argued the Raiders could be looking to see how Kaepernick would be for later in the season. He compares it to Bill Parcells’ “Ready List.” A list that featured names of unsigned free agents at each position in case someone got hurt.

“When I heard McDaniels say the Raiders had worked out a ton of guys, I thought of the Ready List, and thought of the ton of guys McDaniels and Ziegler saw Bill Belichick direct the Patriots to work out when they worked under Belichick,” King wrote. “That’s the way smart NFL people do business. In fact, I heard last week the Raiders have worked out two kickers this month, even though Las Vegas employs one of the best kickers in football, Daniel Carlson. Be ready for emergencies, always.

“My guess is McDaniels and Ziegler have that Ready List, for sure, and the workout of Kaepernick was to see where he might fall on that list in case the Raiders get an injury at quarterback. Or in case another team gets a quarterback hurt and trades for Mullens, leaving the Raiders with a roster spot to be filled by a quarterback.”
