Former NFL lineman and current analyst Mark Schlereth didn’t pull any punches when discussing the recent trade between the Cowboys and 49ers, sending Trey Lance to Dallas. Schlereth ripped Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over the move.

During a recent edition of the Stinkin’ Truth podcast, Schlereth sounded off on Dallas. He was pretty fired up, too.

“Well, let me just be very clear on this,” Schlereth said “This is why … this is why the Cowboys will never win s***. Because Jerry Jones can’t help himself.”

The Cowboys sent a 2024 fourth-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for Lance. He will now be the team’s backup quarterback entering the 2023 campaign.

Schlereth’s biggest issue? That Jones reportedly made the move without discussions. It seemed to be a pretty arbitrary decision.

“I said it, it’s there. You think about Jerry Jones. You’re gonna go out there, and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization? Stephen Jones? Your head coach, Mike McCarthy? Your quarterback?” Schlereth said. “Listen, I don’t really care if you involve your quarterback or not. But to not involve your head coach? What does it say about your head coach?

“‘Hey guys, I know he’s your head coach. But he truly has no authority in this organization, so you don’t have to listen to him. You don’t have to pay attention because the buck stops with me. Your coach doesn’t have the authority to fire you, I do.’”

Tell us how you really fell, Mark.

49ers GM John Lynch explains Trey Lance decision

In 2021, San Francisco selected Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Obviously, that didn’t go the way they planned. He played in just six games as a rookie in 2021 and an injury last season ended his year after just two games.

So, after a rocky two years, the team decided to move on from the quarterback. 49ers general manager John Lynch explained San Francisco’s decision.

“We took a shot and it didn’t work out. We own that. We take accountability for it. His story is still very much unwritten. I’m excited for Trey. Dallas stepped up and really wanted him,” Lynch said.

Lance has thrown just 102 passes in two years, completing 56 of them. He has totaled 797 yards through the air with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 235 yards and a score.
