Steelers fans are growing more and more frustrated with Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada. During Monday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, a “Fire Canada” chant broke out because of the team’s offensive woes.

This week, Canada was asked about that instance, but brushed it aside as a “passionate” fanbase wanting their team to win.

“Obviously, I was working, we had a tough play,” Canada said. “There’s not one ounce of lack of confidence in the players that I have, or lack of confidence of the coaches that I have. We’re going to play better, we’re going to get it right. We’re not putting out on the field what we expected to do in those two games.

“The fans want us to win. They want us to play better, so there’s nothing wrong with their passion in those things. And obviously, we’re not going to — Mike T says it all the time, we’re not running away from it. We expect to be better. We’re going to be better. I firmly believe that. So, until we do that, obviously there’s going to be frustration. [There’s] more frustration with our guys because we’re not happy with what we’re putting on tape and putting on the field. So, we’ll continue to work and we’ll get it right and we’ll get it better. I firmly believe that.”

Despite the unrest in the crowd, the Steelers did pull out a 26-22 victory over the Browns to improve to 1-1 on the season. It was a nice bounce-back performance for Pittsburgh, which got blown out by the San Francisco 49ers in the opening weekend.

Canada joined the Steelers staff in 2020 as the quarterbacks coach. Over the past three seasons, he’s served as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Kenny Pickett speaks on Steelers offense

Fans can boo all they want, but Pittsburgh knows the offense must show improvement. Canada knows it and quarterback Kenny Pickett knows it.

Pickett spoke about the offensive woes and the lack of identity through two games this week.

“We’ve got to find it. Clearly, we don’t have one,” Pickett said this week when he met with reporters at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

“It’s a team game, the ultimate team game. One guy does something wrong on a play as an offense, it usually doesn’t go your way. So, we’ve got to stay together. Don’t let the popcorn effect happen, which is one guy on each play.”

Pittsburgh travels to Las Vegas to play the Raiders this Sunday.
