Matthew Stafford's wife reveals embarrassing wedding day gaffe involving Calvin Johnson

When you are the face of an NFL franchise and wealthy beyond a common man’s wildest dreams, your weddings must be pretty awesome. For Super Bowl champion and longtime star NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford, that was most definitely the case. On his special day, Stafford’s wedding and afterparty was accompanied by a different sort of bar. Instead of one that handed out cocktails, the Stafford wedding bar belonged to Nike and handed out shoes to every guest except one.

Eight years later, Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly, was recently recounting the grand old time that was their wedding day recently, and explained the reason behind the shoe bar.

“We had a Nike bar cause Matthew was sponsored by Nike at this point, and we made sure we got everyone’s shoe sizes when they sent in their RSVPs so we had shoes for everyone, just to give your feet a second after you’ve been on them all night,” Kelly explained.

Matthew and Kelly were expecting their wedding guests to party so hard that they’d need new shoes by the end of the night, so they went ahead and provided some with the help of their good friends at Nike. That’s a pretty sweet deal for anyone who got to go — unless you’re Calvin Johnson.

“We missed one pair of shoes in the Nike bar, and that one pair was Calvin Johnson’s. We didn’t have his shoes,” Kelly laughed as she explained how Johnson was slighted. But she blames her husband.

“I looked at Matthew, and I was like…this is your fault.”

That wasn’t the only wedding day snafu regarding shoes, according to Stafford’s wife. Kelly went on to say that Matt actually forgot his shoes on their wedding day and sent his mother-in-law scrambling into her room to ask if she had Matt’s shoes by any chance.

“I’ll never forget because my mom came into my room day of our wedding, she was like, ‘Hey, hon,’ and I was like, ‘What’s wrong?’ and she’s like, ‘Nothing’s wrong, you don’t by any chance have Matthew’s shoes in your bag, do you?’ And I was like, ‘No,’ and she was like, ‘OK, alright.’

“If you know Atlanta, traffic is awful, we were already downtown, and we did not live close to downtown, so they had to drive all the way back to get Matthew’s (freaking) shoes that he forgot and try to get back for the wedding in time, which they did, but that was the biggest, I think hiccup, was Matthew.”

Wow, Matthew Stafford just getting thrown underneath the bus by his own wife — both for screwing up his buddy and teammate Calvin Johnson’s shoes at the wedding, and for forgetting his own footwear the day of the event.
