Kelvin Joseph is back on the field with the Dallas Cowboys for training camp after a turbulent offseason. Authorities cleared Joseph of any connection as a part of a fatal shooting earlier this year. Now, head coach Mike McCarthy is ready for Joseph to have a strong camp before the season.

McCarthy addressed Joseph and his situation during a press conference at camp in Oxnard, California. He says he has put forth the appropriate effort as a player and as a person to regain their trust.

“I thought Kelvin, obviously after being involved in that situation, showed humility to his teammates. We had internal discussions and so forth,” said McCarthy. “He was a full participant in the offseason program. I think he has put forth the energy and focus that he needs to move forward.”

The incident happened at a club on March 18th and took the life of 20-year old Cameron Ray. Joseph was, at one point, a person of interest in the case. Since then, police have made arrests and absolved Joseph of any involvement. Mickey Spagnola, a columnist for the team’s website, says Mike McCarthy, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys trust that this matter is over for Joseph.

“(The NFL’s) movement is at glacier speeds when coming to incidents such as this. The Cowboys have stood firm on the issue that the 22-year-old is good to go from a legal standpoint,” said Spagnola.

The former Kentucky and LSU corner played in 10 games for Dallas last season. He started twice for the Cowboys and, in total, finished with two pass deflections, a fumble recovery, and 16 tackles. With his second year ahead, Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys want to see him put his best foot forward from here, both on and off the field.

Jerry Jones sends strong message to Kelvin Joseph after fatal shooting incident

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly addressed the Kelvin Joseph situation regarding his connection to a fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Dallas man, noting that Cowboys upper management has had ‘several discussions‘ about what to do with the former Kentucky and LSU standout defensive back.

“We obviously don’t need our players to be involved in situations that make this come up about your character,” Jones said. “He needs to be a good player on and off the field. We’re going to give him a chance to do that. (Our message to him is) get in here and be a good player. Be a guy everybody depends on, and make your name in a positive way and clean it up.”

Joseph isn’t expected to be charged by the Dallas police, but Jones wants to see Joseph change his narrative in a positive way throughout training camp. Before moving on, Jones added that Joseph is having a “real good camp.”

Dall police cleared the former SEC cornerback wasof any connection to the shooting by Dallas police earlier this month. The incident occurred at a club, and led to the death of 20-year old Cameron Ray. Joseph maintained from the night of the incident that he was not involved in the shooting — and that he was unarmed that night and was not looking for any violent encounters. Joseph and his lawyer stated that the incident escalated without his involvement or consent.
