Minnesota Vikings hiring former Texas A&M quarterback
Indianapolis Colts assistant and former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Jerrod Johnson is heading to Minnesota, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Johnson spent three seasons with the Colts, with the last two as an offensive quality control coach. He will be an offensive assistant with the Vikings in 2022.
The former Aggie signal-caller also worked as an Elite 11 coach, helping to develop some of the top high school quarterback prospects in the nation.
Johnson was Texas A&M’s starting quarterback from 2008 to 2010. He finished his career with the Aggies ranked first in school history with 8,011 passing yards and 8,888 yards total offense. He is now second in school history in passing yards after Kellen Mond and third in total offense behind Johnny Manziel and Mond. Jerrod Johnson eventually lost his starting job with the Aggies to Ryan Tannehill after throwing nine interceptions in the first five games of the 2010 season.
After signing as an undrafted free agent with the Eagles in 2011, Johnson was a journeyman around the NFL and CFL until 2016. He started coaching with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program.
Vikings expected to hire former SEC coach
The Minnesota Vikings are expected to hire Chris Rumph as their defensive line coach, a source told On3. Rumph is a former assistant in the college football coaching ranks, making stops at Alabama, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. He was the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears last season.
As the defensive line coach for the Bears, he got great results out of that unit. Robert Quinn had 18.5 sacks for Chicago, and Rumph also got solid play out of a few defensive linemen. He was the Houston Texans outside linebackers coach in 2020.
Rumph has coached college football for over 15 years. His son, Chris Rumph II, played his college football at Duke and was drafted by the LA Chargers in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Vikings defensive line in 2022 has as chance to be very good if their pieces can get healthy. Danielle Hunter is one of the best pass rushers in the league, if he can stay healthy. That’s a big if. He missed all of the 2020 season with a herniated disc in his neck and played in just seven games in 2021 as the result of a torn pectoral muscle.
