Mystik Dan wins 150th running of Kentucky Derby
During a historic day, Mystik Dan won the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 156,710.
In the latest Running of the Roses, Mystik Dan won the race in a photo finish affair, literally beating out the competition by a nose at the end of the race. Mystik Dan just edged out on the inside, holding off a pair of challengers.
Now, we’ll wait and see if there’s an opportunity for the Triple Crown in 2024.

In an ever-changing sports landscape, the Kentucky Derby is still a sweet slice of the Americana pie.
“I think tradition has more to do with it than anything else,” NBC Sports’ Randy Moss said. “Obviously, way back in the day, horse racing was part of the holy trinity of American sports—baseball, boxing, and horse racing. Now, with the booming popularity of the NFL and other professional team sports, horse racing has been pushed further down the list in terms of general public recognition on a daily basis.
“But in America, with so many sports competing for the entertainment dollar, we’ve become a society that is focused on the big events. The Super Bowl. A lot of people don’t even watch the NFL until you get to the Super Bowl. Golf. Many people don’t pay attention to golf until you get to the Masters or the U.S. Open. A lot of people don’t watch NCAA basketball until you get to the NCAA Tournament. The same applies to the Kentucky Derby.”
The Kentucky Derby was officially a sell out of course. Back when tickets were available, standing-room general admission tickets had a starting price of $275. A private suite would run you $135,000 to reserve to watch the Run for the Roses.
If you wanted to have a seat at Churchill Downs, well, those were priced at a minimum of $650. A seat for a dining experience was $1,375. The Kentucky Derby “experience” packages were $2,199. Add a hotel room, and the price goes up to $7,701.
