One thing that truly grinds the gears of basketball fans is the issue of flopping. It has become a big talking point once again in the NBA as players flail and exaggerate their way into calls which, at times, make big differences in the outcome of games.

With that in mind, the association reportedly has plans to nip that problem in the bud. According to information from Shams Charania at The Athletic, the NBA’s Competition Committee is ‘discussing in-game penalties for flopping.’

From what Charania points out, any called flop would now lead to a technical free throw. He also added that the league is considering a potential rehearsal of the rule change in the next few months at the NBA Summer League.

At the moment, the NBA’s flopping policy only comes into play following games. There are no in-game penalties for the tactic as it usually just results in fines following reviews after the contests have been decided.

This is different from the policies of other basketball leagues, specifically FIBA. Their flopping rule also results in a technical free throw.

The NBA has continued to create ways to make their game more viewable, especially for the common fan. Eliminating flops from the matchups altogether would go a long way in making strides in that effort and better improve the integrity that comes with the league’s product on the court.
