Happy Gilmore 2 is officially happening, and Adam Sandler is reprising his role as the title character. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix officially ordered the sequel to Happy Gilmore. The streaming service shared the news at its upfront presentation on Wednesday but did not release any details about the film, including storyline or director.

Earlier this year, Sandler appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and said that Happy Gilmore 2 could start filming in the near future. “We’re working on it, me and (Tim) Herlihy are diligently trying to make a good reason for everyone to watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about it,” Sandler said during the interview. “We’ve got some good ideas.”

Sandler went on to say he wants to honor the stars of the first film who have passed away like Carl Weathers and Bob Barker. “I would love Drew Carey to be in this movie out of respect to Bob,” Sandler said. “When we were writing stuff, Bob was alive. When we were writing stuff, Carl Weathers was alive. When we were writing stuff, Joe Flaherty was alive. It sucks, we love those guys. They were such a big part of the movie and just great people. But we’re going to get them involved somehow. They’ll be involved.”

Christopher McDonald is all-in with ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Christopher McDonald starred in Happy Gilmore and played the iconic villain Shooter McGavin. In 2022, McDonald spoke to PopCulture.com about reprising his role in a sequel.

“I would love to do it,” McDonald exclusively told PopCulture. “I think it has to be something sort of like a Ryder Cup. Yeah. Where the coach, the captain picks… We’re all good golfers and the captain picks Gilmore. ‘Are you out of your mind? He’s a disgrace to the game!’ Then, of course, Gilmore, being called Happy Gilmore 2, makes the final putt that keeps the cup in America. That’s how it goes. The middle part, I don’t know yet. But oh my God, Shooter would go crazy if Gilmore was picked because Shooter is a serious golfer and Gilmore’s like, ‘I’m just saving Grandma’s house.'”

Happy Gilmore tells the story of a struggling ice hockey player (Sandler) who discovers a newfound talent for golf and competes in various golf tournaments to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. The film also starred Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Allen Covert and Kevin Nealon. Happy Gilmore earned nearly $40 million at the box office and won the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight, which was Sandler fighting Barker.
