It did not take long for the New England Patriots to decide what to do with former Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King. After participating in New England’s rookie minicamp, the Patriots have opted to waive King. The former Hurricanes quarterback initially signed with them shortly after the NFL draft as an undrafted rookie free agent.

The Patriots brought King on and attempted to use him at various positions on the offense. Although King, who was discussed as a potential first-round pick before last season, has been primarily a quarterback throughout his college career, he was eager for the opportunity that New England presented him. Now, it appears that his time as a Patriot has come to an end. But King will have plenty of time to find a home between now and the start of next season.

King spent six years playing college football between Houston and Miami. And for both schools, King was the star of each team’s offense, putting up big numbers. For his career, he threw for 8,378 yards, 76 touchdowns, and just 19 interceptions. King also ran for over 2,000 yards with 32 touchdowns on the ground and caught another five touchdowns. Despite that, the five-foot-eleven quarterback from Manville, Tx, went undrafted. One of the biggest reasons for this is King’s inability to be available. In his final season with the Hurricanes and the Cougars, King missed most of the season after being knocked out with an injury.

Patriots trade Jarrett Stidham to Raiders

The New England Patriots have traded backup quarterback Jarett Stidham to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to NBC Sports Boston’s Albert Breer. To complete the deal, he will be packaged with a 2023 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round pick.

A former Auburn and Baylor star, Stidham was drafted No. 133 overall in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has only seen the field sparingly over his first three seasons, but now gets a fresh opportunity to establish himself as a capable backup in the league.

After the Patriots drafted former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones in the first round last year, it became clear that Jarett Stidham would serve as a backup or be traded. With the team again selected a quarterback this year in Bailey Zappe, there was no longer a future for the older player.

In Las Vegas, the Raiders have invested big in starting quarterback Derek Carr and brought in plenty offensive weapons to make another playoff run under new head coach Josh McDaniels, who coached his new backup over the past several seasons as a coordinator. With Marcus Mariota leaving the team for a starting opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons, the second-string job is up for grabs.
