Shortly after arriving in Houston for initial team workouts ahead of the 2024 NFL season, new Texans wideout Robert Woods had very complimentary things to say about the organization and its leadership, even comparing it to a certain Super-Bowl-winning culture that he was apart of. While speaking to media this week, the 31-year-old receiver said the current Texans reming him of the mindset his old Rams teams used to have in the early going under Sean McVay, before they became the best team in the league.

Per Woods, it goes back to a 2021 game between his Rams, who wound up winning it all, and the Texans, who really didn’t have much to play for at that point.

“Those guys over there had every reason to call it a day after we went up big on them, but they didn’t,” said Woods after LAR defeated Houston 38-22 late in the 2021 season. “They kept competing, and when you see that as a player, you know what they are going through. You know that they are fighting for pride and dignity. If they keep that attitude during the rough times, they will be ok in the future.”

Woods claims he’s thought good things were in store for this franchise ever since that game in 2021. He just didn’t know he’d be apart of the group that (hopefully) turns the culture around.

“I never knew I would come here to this offense or to this team,” Woods continued. “Being here, just coming here and hearing DeMeco (Ryans) talk for years, I guess, being in the Rams and seeing him kind of develop with the 49ers and take over that defense and give energy to that linebacker group, that whole team, and be able to see him come here and kind of feed that same energy to our team. I see from our defensive side, a lot of energy, a lot of juice spreading over to the offense.”

That 49ers offense is notoriously complicated and Robert Woods seemed to suggest that Coach Ryans is bringing a lot of the little details over with him.

“In this offense, receivers are asked to do a lot,” Woods responded when asked about the offense, which will be similar to the one in San Francisco. “That’s obviously run crisp routes, make plays down the field, be able to take the ball for short catches, get a lot of YAC (yards after catch), and make guys miss.”

If Woods can get this brand of the 49ers system down, he’s a guy that will do wonders in so many of the short yardage, run-after-catch designs.
