NFL will not suspend Ravens WR Zay Flowers following assault allegation
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers will not be punished for an alleged assault allegation. On Thursday, the NFL announced that it will not take any action against Flowers and is eligible to participate in all of the Ravens’ activities this year.
“Following a review, the NFL concluded there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that Zay Flowers engaged in any activity that violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy,” the league said in a statement, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. “There will be no action taken by the league and Flowers remains eligible to participate in all team activities.”
Flowers was under investigation by the Baltimore County police and out-of-state law enforcement for an alleged domestic assault in January, according to The Baltimore Banner. He was never charged, and police suspended the investigation in February.
“She stated that she was physically assaulted which left her with multiple bruises,” police wrote in a report. But when contacted by Baltimore County police later in the month, the woman said there were no further issues, nor did she disclose further details relating to the original report.
“Police wrote that they contacted an attorney, presumably for Flowers, in an attempt to speak with him. The attorney told them he ‘would not avail himself at this time in reference to this report.’ The investigation was deemed suspended on Feb. 16.”
The alleged assault took place around the area of Owings Mills, Maryland on Jan. 21. At the time, the woman reportedly claimed she was physically assaulted and the perpetrator’s brother had drawn a firearm. The woman did not want to share the suspect’s name due to the high profile of the abuser.
Zay Flowers had a strong rookie season for Ravens
Flowers, 23, was selected by the Ravens at No. 22 overall in last year’s draft after having a standout career at Boston College. In his rookie season, Flowers caught 77 passes for 858 yards and five touchdowns. He also played in two playoff games and recorded nine receptions for 156 yards and one score.
During the 2023 season, Flowers made NFL history, joining Ja’Marr Chase as the only wide receivers since 1970 to tally at least 50 yards from scrimmage in each of his first seven games in the league. “I would say for seven games in, yes, it’s probably as good as it can be,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said at the time, per AtoZ Sports.
“[Zay Flowers] is really diligent. He’s very smart, and yet, he’s not anywhere near where he’s going to be, in terms of understanding the offense. He’s still learning. He’s still figuring out where to line up; you saw it yesterday a few times. He’s still learning the nuances of the routes.”
