Brittany and Patrick Mahomes joined SportsCenter Saturday morning ahead of the very first game by the Kansas City Current, a women’s soccer team who the couple is part-owners of.

The Current will play in the National Women’s Soccer League, NWSL, and kick-off for the very first time today against the Portland Thorns at home in their brand new stadium. When on ESPN, Patrick Mahomes compared the very first crowd to those at Chiefs games.

“It’s been remarkable to be in the stadium and see the fans. I feel like I’m at Arrowhead, that’s the type of vibe I’m getting here. It’s going to be a historic day and the start of something great,” he said.

Mahomes would go on to explain why helping get the Current off the ground is a project that means a lot to him, especially with the significance in the women’s sports world.

“Yeah, I just want to give back in the best way possible and to be making history in women’s sports, I have my own daughter, to give them the platform that they deserve. I mean, I’ve seen the type of talent they showcase every single game and we wanted to build a stadium that matched that talent. And to have it here in Kansas City as the first women’s-specific stadium, and it’s just the start of something that will kinda take off throughout the rest of the world.”

Mahomes is now a part-owner of three KC pro teams, including the Current, Sporting KC (men’s soccer) and the Kansas City Royals (baseball). What is it that he loves so much about having his hand in all these different pro sports teams?

“For me, it just shows how much support Kansas City has. You go to any game, you see the fanbase and how much support,” explained Mahomes. “They really love the players for what they do on the field, but also off of it as well. It’s a great city. It’s the place me and Brittany want to raise our kids in, and it speaks to the people in this city.”

Patrick Mahomes has already led the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, and also had previously invested in Sporting KC and the Royals, before helping found a women’s soccer team in the city as well. When it’s all said and done, it’ll be tough to find a sports figure more impactful to Kansas City than No. 15 for the Chiefs.
