Even analysts who normally break down college football and not the NFL, like Paul Finebaum, are sharing their takeaways from the Super Bowl on Monday morning. In this case, Finebaum has some thoughts to add to the debate about how great Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes really is.

While making his weekly appearance on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, Finebaum was asked about his thoughts on the game and he shared that he thinks fans and analysts need to slow down crowning Mahomes the greatest quarterback ever.

“That Taylor can do no wrong, I guess,” Paul Finebaum said. “It was fine. It was a great game. The only thing that I would say is let’s slow down on crowning Patrick Mahomes the greatest quarterback of all time. He’s still four behind Tom Brady.”

Greg McElroy then pushed back, praising Patrick Mahomes’ performance, and arguing he’s already one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL, and that you can’t put him too far behind Tom Brady and Joe Montana.

“No, I don’t think you can, and by the way what I said a minute ago, that doesn’t mean he can’t be the greatest. He’s well on his way, and I don’t think he has to get to seven, either,” Finebaum said.

“But what he’s done in a really short, finite period of time is probably the greatest accomplishment of any quarterback ever. It’s always a tricky question. I’m guilty of having proclaimed one man the greatest college coach of all time, then I had to come back and proclaim another guy. So, you do this at your own risk, but just the fact that it’s a conversation just shows how great he is.”

Freezing cold Troy Aikman take resurfaces after Patrick Mahomes wins another Super Bowl

Troy Aikman is one of the NFL’s great quarterbacks, and even though he doesn’t typically come up in GOAT debates, he is in the Hall of Fame and has a respected opinion as a broadcast analyst. At the same time, that doesn’t mean he never has a take come back and bite him, like an old Patrick Mahomes take recently did.

Back in 2019, it was reported by The Athletic that Mahomes had thrown 36% of Aikman’s career touchdown passes in just 8% of the total games. In turn, Aikman took at least some exception to that comparison at the time. So, he came up with a take, writing, “Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles.”

In response, Shehan Jeyarajah posted after the most recent Super Bowl that, “Patrick Mahomes has thrown 132% of Troy Aikman’s passing touchdowns and won 100% of his Super Bowls in about 58% of his career games.”
