As many rookies look to make an impact in their first season at the professional level, perhaps no position allows for more instant production than running back. In the past, we’ve seen players like Saquon Barkley, Alvin Kamara and Ezekiel Elliott tear it up in their rookie seasons.

Now, a new crop of running backs enters the fold. With immense talent scattered throughout, who will be the best of them all in 2021?

Projecting rushing yards for NFL rookies, per Pro Football Focus:

Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers – 1,033. The reigning Doak Walker Award winner, Harris deservedly so was the first running back selected in the NFL Draft. This season, Harris steps into the offense with a golden opportunity as the Steelers’ unquestioned starter. He’s PFF’s choice to lead the group in rushing yards.

Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos – 923. While Williams may have to cede some carries to Melvin Gordon II, the second round selection could separate himself. If he does, he’ll provide the Broncos with another young, dynamic weapon on offense.

Trey Sermon, San Francisco 49ers – 666. Of all running backs, Sermon went to the best situation. Kyle Shanahan is a master at developing the run game, he’ll give Sermon plenty of chances to prove himself throughout his rookie season.

Michael Carter, New York Jets – 534. While the Jets aren’t exactly an offensive juggernaut, they received an influx of talent this offseason. Moreover, Carter is easily their most talented running back, he’ll receive a lionshare of the carries sooner than later.

Other NFL Rookie RBs

Travis Etienne, Jacksonville Jaguars. Unfortunately, the second running back selected in the 2021 NFL Draft won’t get a chance to make the list. Earlier this week, it was announced that Etienne’s season was over due to a foot injury.

Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots. Following the trade of Sony Michel to the Los Angeles Rams, somebody has to make up his share of the carries. Evidently, Stevenson has impressed enough that the Patriots were comfortable relying on him as Damien Harris’ backup.

Chuba Hubbard, Carolina Panthers. Last season, Mike Davis filled in admirably for Christian McCaffrey in his stead. While the Panthers pray that their star running back stays healthy, they drafted Hubbard to fill the void amidst Davis’ departure.

Kylin Hill, Green Bay Packers. In the 2021 NFL Draft, Hill received the ‘honor’ of the most disrespected running back. Following a fantastic career at Mississippi State, he fell to the seventh round. However, instead of letting it bring him down, Hill is using it as motivation to prove his doubters wrong.
