Jerry Jones found a way to make a splash just before the preseason ended with a trade. Dallas took former first-round pick quarterback Trey Lance off the hands of the San Fransico 49ers. An interesting move to say the least, potentially bringing questions to the future of Dak Prescott.

While the Cowboys claim Lance is not in the plans for the 2023 season, Prescott was still asked about the trade on Saturday. On a night when he was the playcaller in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, it was a very professional answer from the Dallas quarterback.

“I obviously understand that it’s a business,” Prescott said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “That’s a first-round talent. You always try to make your team better. We’re gonna welcome him as we do any teammate. Hopefully, it makes us better. … He seems like a great guy.”

Prescott has dealt with injuries over the past few seasons. While Dallas is not wishing anything upon their starting quarterback, there does need to be a viable backup option. Last season was when Cooper Rush stepped in and actually won some games for the Cowboys.

Now, Lance will have to factor into the equation, if the scenario comes up. Rush is the proven commodity but at some point, Jones did make the trade for a reason. But as long as Prescott is healthy, Lance will be nothing but a developmental project.

Dak Prescott does not provide comment on contract situation

With how Prescott’s contract works, his cap hit is going to hit $60 million in the near future. Obviously, Dallas is going to need to take some off the books in order to field a team worthy of competing for a Super Bowl. Multiple options are on the table but the perceived best option is an extension.

Nothing has come to fruition this offseason and Prescott did not provide too much comment on the situation on Saturday. Prescott wants to leave the business side alone for now, wanting to fully focus on the upcoming 2023 season.

“I’m gonna leave those talks in the office where business is handled,” Prescott said. “There will come a time when that happens.”

As for how the Lance trade potentially affects the Prescott extension, Jones claimed the two had nothing to do with one another.

“[That] didn’t cross my mind. Period,” Jones said. “I know that Dak wants to do anything we can to improve this team.”
