The Las Vegas Raiders made splashy moves this offseason at the quarterback position. It may not have been much of a move on their part, but the Raiders and long-time franchise QB Derek Carr moved on from one another, with Vegas attempting to trade Carr for a while before ultimately letting him walk in free agency, where he landed with the New Orleans Saints to be their starter for the 2023 season and hopefully beyond. The other move was signing a new quarterback themselves: Jimmy Garoppolo.

Commonly known as “Jimmy G,” the former 49ers quarterback enjoyed great success in the bay area, including the 2019-20 season, where he quarterbacked San Fran to within a whisker of a Super Bowl victory. Beyond the 2020 run, Garoppolo helped SF to the conference title game in 2021 but was then benched to start this past year.

However, that didn’t last long, as starter Trey Lance was injured and Garoppolo took over before he also got hurt and missed the remainder of the season. Once again, the 49ers ignored him in the offseason and he finally moved on, landing with Las Vegas. Now, it’s all about getting healthy before taking over the Raiders job for Jimmy G.

According to The Athletic, we don’t know much about the recovery, but we do know it will take time and won’t be rushed. On Thursday, they reported:

“Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is not participating in the team’s OTA practices this week as he continues to recover from the left foot injury he suffered late last season, coach Josh McDaniels said Thursday. While McDaniels declined to discuss specifics, team and league sources said Garoppolo had surgery in March after signing with the Raiders. His recovery timeline from that procedure is unknown.”

However, the report noted Jimmy G may even be out until training camp, according to McDaniels. The LV head coach said he’s not rushing his injured QB and sees no reason for urgency with a player at a delicate position such as quarterback when there aren’t live games for another few months.

“He’s going through his process just like we knew he would,” McDaniels said, according to NBC Sports. “Nothing has happened that would surprise us based on the information we had.” He then added that “it could be” training camp before Garoppolo gets on the field. “We’re always going to air at this time of the year on being smart. We don’t play a football game, like I said, until three and a half months.”
