As former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh gets his feet down in Los Angeles and gets set to hire a staff, he’ll have plenty of quality options to fill out the coaching ranks around him.

NFL Network analyst Ian Rapoport suggested a handful of possible names if Harbaugh wanted to ‘get the band back together’ from previous stops, noting Greg Roman, Vic Fangio, Pep Hamilton, David Shaw and potentially Ejiro Evero are available.

Some of those same names were also suggested as potential Jim Harbaugh coaching staff hires by KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson, a noted NFL insider.

So what have each of those coaches and been doing and what’s their connection to Harbaugh? Let’s take a look.

First and foremost, Greg Roman was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator during Harbaugh’s last stint in the NFL, serving in that capacity for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14. When Harbaugh went back to college, Roman remained in the NFL.

He’s had stops with the Buffalo Bills (2015-16) and Baltimore Ravens (2017-22) since, though he stepped down after the 2022 season following a Wild Card round playoff loss.

Vic Fangio, on the other hand, was Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2011-14. Like Roman, he remained in the NFL following Harbaugh’s return to college.

Fangio has been in a number of positions in recent years, including most recently with the Miami Dolphins as defensive coordinator. He’s also been with the Chicago Bears (2015-18), Denver Broncos (2019-21) and Philadelphia Eagles (2022).

Hamilton has fewer NFL ties than the aforementioned two, with his connection to Harbaugh coming from Harbaugh’s time as Stanford‘s head coach, then early on at Michigan. Hamilton had staff crossover in 2010, when he served as Harbaugh’s wide receivers coach. He was also Michigan’s passing game coordinator from 2017-18.

Since the Stanford gig, Hamilton has had various NFL gigs, including stints with the Indianapolis Colts, the Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Houston Texans. So he’s another veteran who could certainly entertain another NFL coaching staff position.

Shaw, meanwhile, was also at Stanford with Harbaugh and served as his replacement there until 2022. Shaw has been out of coaching but has interviewed for multiple NFL head coaching jobs this offseason, so he’s obviously got the chops for it.

Finally, Evero served as an assistant coach for Harbaugh during his San Francisco stint in the NFL. He has also interviewed for NFL head coaching jobs this offseason, having spent the 2023 season as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.

Since his time with Jim Harbaugh, Evero has worked for the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos, in addition to the Panthers.
