The New Orleans Saints received some bad news on Wednesday when it was announced that safety Marcus Maye will be suspended for the next three games.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Maye is receiving a suspension after he violated the NFL’s policy on Substances of Abuse. Here was Schefter’s report, which he tweeted Wednesday afternoon:

“Saints safety Marcus Maye has been suspended without pay for the next three games for violating the NFL Policy on Substances of Abuse.”

However, this isn’t the first time Maye has run into trouble.

Other off-the-field issues for Maye

This past August, a court issued a sentence to New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Maye for a DUI charge that occurred in February 2021.

Per Pro Football Talk, Maye changed his plea from not guilty to no contest. He received a sentence of six months probation and his license will be suspended for that same period of time. The court also requires him to complete 50 hours of community service.

Maye’s attorney, Eric Schwartzreich, issued a brief statement on Tuesday.

“Mr. Maye’s legal saga has come to a conclusion today and he looks forward to focusing on football,” Schwartzreich said, per Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com.

Initially, Maye faced charges of driving under the influence, DUI/damage to property and person, and leaving the scene of the crash.

Maye was also arrested last September for aggravated assault.

Maye signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints in March of 2022. They signed him the same day they lost star safety Marcus Williams to the Baltimore Ravens.

Marcus Maye played the 2021 season on a franchise tag with the Jets after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension but expressed his desire to move on with a fresh start in 2022. His new deal is worth $28.5 million over three seasons with $15 million in guaranteed money.

After going in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft at pick No. 39, Maye established himself as one of the best defensive backs in the league. In 60 career games, he posted 312 tackles with six interceptions and 24 pass deflections. Maye also has four forced fumbles and 3.5 sacks in five seasons.
