Terrible news on the injury front for the San Francisco 49ers. For the second time this season, the Niners have lost a cornerback for the rest of the season due to a leg injury. First, it was Emmanuel Mosely, who tore his ACL and will miss the remainder of the year. Now, Ian Rapoport reports that cornerback Jason Verrett has torn his Achilles and will miss the entire season.

Here was Rap’s tweet with his report:

“Unreal: #49ers CB Jason Verrett tore his Achilles and is out for the season. The injury happened yesterday in practice.”

Absolutely brutal news for everyone involved. After losing Mosely, San Francisco was expecting to slide Verrett right in to replace him, actually. Verrett tore his ACL one game into last year’s season and missed the rest of it and was finally getting ready to return to the field this week after an elongated recovery.

Alas, Verrett wound up further injuring himself just before the return with an even worse injury than the ACL — an Achilles tear, which will take him out of the rest of this season for certain, and very he’ll very likely miss a chunk of next year. Just an awful development for the former TCU star and NFL veteran.

Jason Verrett is looking at a second straight extreme injury recovery and basically two and a half years of sitting out hurt. He’ll be over 32 years old the next time he takes an NFL field, and he was 29 the last time he played two consecutive games.

Hopefully, the 49ers vet has another recovery in him and a few years at the tail end of his career left to play. But it certainly doesn’t look good for his playing future. Best of luck to Jason Verrett in his recovery over the next year.
