Sean McVay delivered some harrowing news on Cooper Kupp on Friday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Rams superstar was already ruled out for Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, but it’s evident that the buck may not stop there. As Kupp deals with a lingering hamstring issue, McVay revealed that it’s a “definite possibility” the 2021 NFL Offensive Player of the Year could land on the injured reserve.

“We have until tomorrow to make that decision, but I would say there is a definite possibility on all those guys,” regarding Kupp’s chances at landing on the injured reserve, along with backup quarterback Stetson Bennett and tight end Hunter Long, via ESPN’s Field Yates.

Alas, that doesn’t exactly bode well for Rams fans, fantasy football players who have Kupp on their team, or football fans in general. After missing so much time last season, Kupp missing from action is a detriment to the league as a whole, and hugely disappointing to hear.

The best case scenario is he doesn’t land on injured reserve and can play sooner rather than later, but McVay didn’t exactly inspire confidence with his previous statements from earlier this week.

“I would just say this, it’s trying to just figure out what’s going on with him,” McVay said. “Again, I’m kind of speaking out of turn. I just know that we’re trying to open up every avenue in regards to figuring out what’s going on, why is he feeling some of the sensations and things like that in his hamstring. Is it soft tissue? Is there something nerve-wise? And I would be speaking out of turn.”

“I think we’re really trying to be able to figure that out. He felt like he gained a lot of information, was able to do a couple day’s worth of treatment that was beneficial. But it wasn’t anything that’s like, OK, he’s going to be back right now. And we had a feeling that there could be a couple weeks that we need to just be able to take it a day at a time and then hopefully we’ll start to see some positive results as it relates to how he’s feeling.”

Even with missing most of the 2022 season, Kupp caught 75 passes for 812 yards and six touchdowns. That shows how valuable he is to the Rams. And of course during his historic 2021 season, Kupp put up video-game numbers, catching 145 passes for 1,937 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Time will tell what happens with Cooper Kupp in 2023, but it seems as if his injury issues are here to stay, at least for the time being.
