Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a joke about previously drafting Taco Charlton being a mistake, and Charlton responded to the jab on Twitter. Jones was discussing the Cowboys’ draft day decision-making and said multiple people have voices on who to draft. Jones then joked that a recent major bust of a pick, Taco Charlton, was a decision made by his son — Executive Vice President Stephen Jones.

Charlton took to his social media after hearing the joke, and shared a light-hearted response that seems to claim it doesn’t bother him at all.

Taco Charlton responds to Jerry Jones’ comments

Charlton’s response definitely indicates how important draft day is for players and teams both, as his work to become a first-round draft pick earned him a guaranteed payday despite not working out on the field for Dallas. His rookie deal was a four-year contract worth just over $10 million, with over $7 million guaranteed. While he likely isn’t happy hearing from his former team that he’s become a punchline to their owner’s jokes, the money Jones paid him will make it easier to bear, according to Charlton.

Jones made his comments during a press conference with himself, Stephen Jones and coach Mike McCarthy where he answered a question about who has the final say in draft decisions.

“Our process is an inclusive one, we’ve said it,” Jerry Jones said. “There’s a lot of talk in this business about who makes the call, who actually makes the call. Taco was Stephen’s call. [Micah] Parsons is my call.”

Stephen found humor in it himself, laughing along with head coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of the media.

“That’s not that funny to me,” Stephen Jones said with a smile on his face, playing into the joke.

Charlton was drafted No. 28 overall by Dallas in the 2017 NFL Draft but his Cowboys career was short-lived. He did not quite live up to expectations, recording just four sacks during his two seasons. Jerry Jones decided it was time to move on before the 2019 season and now, Charlton has played for three different teams over the past three years.

As for Parsons — who Jerry claims was his call — he proved to be one of the best picks in last year’s draft, winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. A night and day difference between the two, Parsons is on track to be the franchise’s defensive anchor for years to come.
