Houston Texans linebacker Garret Wallow returned to his hometown of New Orleans this weekend for a good cause. Wallow hosted his first-ever youth camp Saturday afternoon at John Curtis High School, where he attended.

The camp featured not only Wallow, but also some of his Texans teammates, and was free for kids ages 7-16 to attend. Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson captured some video from the camp, as well as Wallow delivering a message to the attendees.

“I just want to thank everybody that’s come out,” Wallow said prior to the start of the camp. “This is my first camp. I’m super excited. I have a bunch of my teammates here. A lot of guys that you can learn from. They’ve been in the NFL for some years. The main thing is when y’all are out here today, just have a good time. Just have fun. Be yourselves. Dance around. Just be yourselves. Just bring yourself and we gon’ bring energy.”

Kids in attendance got to learn drills and even run some plays with Wallow and other NFL players. It was surely an experience they will remember all summer long, and the impact could even encourage the next future star from John Curtis High School to emerge.

Regardless, it’s good to see NFL players using their influence to give back to the places that made them who they are today. Now Wallow will focus on gearing up for his third season in Houston as the Texans are set to begin training camp on July 26.

More on the career of Garret Wallow

Following his high school days, Wallow went on to play college football at TCU from 2017-20. He ended his career with the Horned Frogs having recorded 295 tackles (32.5 for loss), 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

Garret Wallow was named first-team All-Big 12 and Honorable Mention Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior before the Texans selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Since then he has appeared in 30 games with five starts to amass 36 tackles (three for loss) and a sack.

This season, Wallow projects to again play a backup role at linebacker behind names such as Christian Harris, Christian Kirksey and Denzel Perryman. The Texans are coming off of a 3-13-1 record in 2022 but and drafted quarterback CJ Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick.

Houston opens up the regular season on Sept. 10 against the Baltimore Ravens.
