Golf fans got some bad news ahead of one of the biggest tournaments of the year on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods is not in the field for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. He failed to commit to the event by Friday night’s 5 PM EST deadline. Woods wasn’t included in the 144-player field that was released on Friday. It’s certainly not surprising to see him take time off after he withdrew from The Genesis Open a few weeks ago (back spasms, flu, dehydration).

Here was what he had to say following his withdrawal from The Genesis Open. from Tiger himself via Twitter:

Tiger Woods on withdrawal from Genesis Open

“I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from (The Genesis Invitational) due to illness, which we now know is influenza. I am resting and feeling better. Good luck to the players this weekend. I’m disappointed to not be there and want to thank @GenesisUSA and all the fans for the support.”

Woods is now 48 years old, and he has won The Players Championship twice in his unbelievable career. But he hasn’t played in the event since 2019. The 15-time major champion recently said he wanted to play in about one tournament per month as he continues to rehab from fusion surgery. That surgery was performed last April to deal with post-traumatic arthritis in his right foot and ankle caused by a terrifying crash in 2021.

The Player’s Championship is annually one of the most anticipated golf tournaments. TPC Sawgrass is a made for TV course, with the signature 17th hole with the island green. It’s one of the most famous holes in all of golf and with good reason. It’s spectacular watching the best players in the world try to deal with the different conditions and land on a green that’s surrounded completely by water.

This tournament also boasts one of the strongest fields of any event on the PGA Tour. France’s very own Matthieu Pavon, while not one of the biggest stars yet on tour, is currently ranked as the No. 1 player on the PGA Tour. Scottie Scheffler is still among the best players in the game. He’s just struggled with his putter recently. Hideki Matsuyama is currently ranked as the No. 4 player on tour. He’ll be at TPC Sawgrass and he’s currently on the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
