The future of Dalvin Cook remains cloudy as rumors swirl the Minnesota Vikings could move off the star running back.

A trade, which has long been a likely scenario, could happen by the end of the week, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. After June 1, the Vikings have the option to split the $6.2 million cap acceleration over two years, $3.1 million in 2023 and $3.1 million in 2024.

Any team that acquires Cook will take on an $11 million cap hit in 2023 barring a restructured deal. A restructure of Cook’s deal would likely convert most of his salary into a signing bonus that would be spread out over the three remaining years of his deal.

The Miami Dolphins appear to be a logical suitor. Not only is Cook a Miami native, but the Dolphins will gain $13 million in cap space following a post-June 1 release of cornerback Byron Jones. Miami’s running back room includes veterans Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., as well as 2023 third-round selection Devon Achane.

Cook, 27, is coming off his fourth straight 1,000-yard rushing campaign. He suited up in all 17 games for the first time in his career, rushing for 1,173 yards on 4.4 yards per carry and eight touchdowns. Cook added 39 receptions for 295 yards and two scores through the air. In addition, he earned the fourth Pro Bowl nomination of his career.

The Vikings, meanwhile, seem content riding things out with Alexander Mattison should a trade for Cook materialize. Mattison, the 2019 third-round (102nd overall) selection out of Boise State, has served as Cook’s backup. In four seasons, the 24-year-old has rushed for 1,670 yards on 4.1 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns. His role decreased in 2022 as he saw a career-low 74 touches.

Speaking with the media Tuesday, head coach Kevin O’Connell heaped praise on Mattison.

“It’s been really good to see Alex Mattison take a few more reps,” O’Connell said. “And really show that all three-down kinda ownership that he’s been capable of for a long time.”

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was non-committal when asked about Cook last month.

“Conversations are always ongoing with him,” Adofo-Mensah said. “We’re trying to be solutions-oriented and always try to put the roster together within our constraints.”
