Buccaneers QB coach mocks Josh Rosen to motivate Tom Brady
Tom Brady has never been short on motivation. Famously, six quarterbacks were drafted over him in the 2000 NFL Draft. Since then, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback has never let it go.
However, Brady isn’t the only one using his slights as motivating factors. Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Buccaneers quarterback coach Clyde Christensen revealed that he uses Josh Rosen as motivation for his star player.
“Every once in a while I’ll tease about a club and say ‘They wanted him over you,’” Christensen said. “He’s never gotten over that draft, that first draft. I think that’s just the way he fuels himself.
“He keeps it underneath but don’t think that isn’t boiling inside. He knows exactly who did and didn’t believe in him and took someone instead of him. It’s interesting. Last year, I was teasing that the 49ers took Josh Rosen. I go, ‘They could’ve had you and they took Josh Rosen,’ there you go, it’s a fact, right?”
Ouch. While Josh Rosen believed he would become one of the league’s best young quarterbacks with the Arizona Cardinals, he’s now reduced to Tom Brady’s motivating factor. At least Rosen has company, Chad Pennington, Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman, Tee Martin, Marc Bulger and Spergon Wynn knows how he feels.
While Brady felt spurned by the league after the 2000 NFL Draft, he had similar feelings after his free agent saga. While it culminated in his move to Tampa Bay, the process gave him perspective. Once again, the Seven-time Super Bowl Champion didn’t feel the league’s interest matched his ability.
Among the teams to inquire about Brady, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders showed varying levels of interest. Still, the Buccaneers easily made the former Michigan quarterback feel the most welcome.
Tom Brady impressed with Kyle Trask
While Brady finds motivation in everything, Kyle Trask’s motivation is learning from one of the all-time greats. This off-season, the Buccaneers drafted the former Florida quarterback 64th overall.
So far, Trask has endeared himself to Brady through his hard work. Brady mentions that, along with Trask’s commitment to the game of football.
“Kyle’s done a great job from the day that he got here. He’s a very hard worker,” Brady said, per ProFootballTalk. “Kyle’s out here early, stays late, works with the younger guys. All the things you’re really looking for in a young player. This has got to be a huge priority in your life if you want to be doing this job for a long time. You’ve got to make it a huge priority.
“You really don’t know what you don’t know at this point, when you’re one year in or two years in or three years in or five years in. As somebody who’s 22 years in, what I knew at five years in is very different from what I knew at 10, and very different from what I know now.”
For Trask, Brady’s comments represent high praise for the rookie quarterback. In addition, it’s a good start to the career of a man who could be Brady’s possible successor.
Maybe Josh Rosen can take a page out of Tom Brady’s book. If he uses the slight from Christensen as motivation, maybe he can work himself back into the player that shot up draft boards as a UCLA Bruin.
