It’s hard to point to the exact moment that the New England Patriots dynasty came to an end. Many would point to when Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, with the team moving on from Bill Belichick, that era of football in New England is clearly over.

Now, it’s the Jerod Mayo era at head coach and he’s someone that Tom Brady both knows well and believes is going to do great.

“Jerod was a great leader, a great captain, a great friend,” Tom Brady said on The Pat McAfee Show. “I think he had a tremendous amount of success in football and then had success in other parts of his life when he retired. Then, coming back into coaching is great for the NFL and certainly great for the Patriots. I think he has a great understanding of how things need to be done. I think Jerod does an incredible job relating to everybody in the locker room, all the coaches, and I think he’ll do a great job.”

Jerod Mayo and Tom Brady were teammates together in New England and, despite playing on opposite sides of the ball, Brady knows that Mayo is bringing tons to the table as the team rebuilds.

“So, it’s tough for the Patriots. It’s tough for everyone in the NFL. After two weekends from now, it’s gonna be tough for 31 other teams for an entire offseason. There’s only one happy team at the end of the year and then 31 other teams are looking for answers how to get back. The Patriots are one of those teams and they made some significant changes. There’s been some significant change in the NFL. That’s always certain,” Brady said.

“I’m just excited to pay attention and watch it and I’ll be paying attention all offseason to every move and I know when I hit the ground running with Fox next year, we’ll be up to speed and ready to go out there and kick some ass.”

Tedy Bruschi on Patriots’ hire Jerod Mayo

Another New England Patriots legend, Tedy Bruschi, praised Jerod Mayo when the hire was initially made.

“I’m really not surprised at all. The relationship with Mr. (Robert) Kraft, the grooming, working himself up through the ranks, being almost the defacto defensive coordinator with Brian Belichick. I think you’re getting the best of both worlds… there’s a little of Bill Belichick in him, and then there’s not,” Bruschi said.

“I think that’s what they’re looking for. Someone who knows the foundation, the structure, knows the defensive philosophy and the techniques. In terms of what they’re looking for in the organization, sort of the new age… it’s everyone on the same page, someone that’s willing to work and can work with a lot of people. They got the right guy in Jerod Mayo.”
