As the future of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence was expected to grow into the role of the Jaguars’ leader. Evidently, he’s done enough to prove worthy already.

Prior to their Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer enlisted the help of players’ families to announce his team’s captains. Making a cameo was Lawrence’s wife, Marissa, who was chosen to tell her husband the good news.

“Hey Trev,” said Marissa Lawrence. “It’s me and Indi (Lawrence’s dog), she’s a little too tired to video right now. I just wanted to say how proud I am of you for being named one of the team captains.

“I have watched how hard you’ve worked to get where you’re at, and I’ve just always believed in you. I’m so proud of you, and I’m excited to see everything you’re going to accomplish this season, with this team. Just excited for it all. I’m honored that I get to be by your side through it, and I’m just really proud of you. I love you.”

Lawrence’s teammates gave him a round of raucous applause. Afterwards, he received his jersey with the ‘C’ patch on it from Meyer. It was a special moment for the former Clemson quarterback, the first of what could be many memorable moments this season.

Moreover, an impressive group of talent is joining Lawrence as captains for the Jaguars. In addition to the star quarterback, defensive end Josh Allen, linebacker Myles Jack, safety Rayshawn Jenkins, defensive back Shaq Griffin, wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. and center Brandon Linder were also named captains.

“It’s a really cool feeling.”

Following the precious moment, Lawrence spoke about what an awesome feeling it was to be named captain for his team prior to his rookie debut.

“It’s a really cool feeling. Especially as a younger guy, just having that support from my teammates,” Lawrence said via ESPN. “Really, like I said [after] being named a starter and now a captain, nothing changes. Same expectation, and now it’s time to go out there and win some games.

“But I’m really excited. It’s definitely an honor. It’s a cool moment for me to be named a captain with those other guys, just a bunch of great guys in the locker room. We had a ton of guys that got votes, but [it’s] definitely really cool.”

According to Meyer, Lawrence has made a huge impact on the Jaguars already. When tallying up the votes, Meyer eyes-widened when he saw his rookie quarterback was third on the team in total votes.

“I was impressed that he [Lawrence] was up there, I want to say third, in vote-gets,” Meyer said. “That’s a credit to him.”

It was thought that when the Jaguars got the number one pick, Trevor Lawrence could change the trajectory of their franchise. Evidently, the former Clemson star is off to a good start so far in Jacksonville.
