Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is many things: A former college star, a budding NFL quarterback, and a reliable teammate. He is not, however, an adept trash talker.

According to several of his offensive running mates in Jacksonville, the third-year pro has the heart when it comes to trash talking, but not the hard edge. When wideout Zay Jones was asked about it, all he could do was laugh.

“My trash talking abilities, I feel like I have more of a sarcastic trash talking. That’s kind of my tactic,” Lawrence said in a video shared by NFL on CBS. “Hopefully the guys gave me a good grade.”

“I’d probably give him an F,” said Travis Etienne, Jaguars running back and college teammate of Lawrence.

The video shared by CBS captured an array of Lawrence’s trash-talking highlights — so to speak.

The selections included:

  • “We’re about to tear them up, bro.”
  • “We’re about to shred ’em. We’ve got everything we want.”
  • “I’ll take six. Yeah, c’mon, keep coming.”
  • “Hey, let’s go baby.” (He then clapped toward an opponent.)
  • “I play better when you hit me, 52. I like it. I’m kind of messed up.”
  • “Thanks bro” after Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby says “I’m just giving him a hug.”

Etienne had some more analysis, but wasn’t giving up hope on Lawrence’s abilities to burrow underneath and opponent’s skin.

“Not going to lie, it’s kind of like… terrible,” Etienne said. “I feel like he’s just gotta work on it a little bit.”

Fellow Jaguars offensive weapon Calvin Ridley, yet to feature on the field with Lawrence, concurred with Etienne’s assesment.

“Trevor’s trash talk maybe needs a little work,” Ridley said, smiling.

Fellow wideout Christian Kirk complimented Lawrence for how nice his trash talk is — not necessarily a compliment, really.

“He never crosses the line and it’s almost like, in a nice way he’s talking trash. Nobody usually gets mad,” Kirk said.

And after a season where the Jaguars not only made the playoffs, but won a game and had the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on the ropes in Arrowhead, Lawrence might have earned himself a little more license to let loose, verbally.

Only time will tell if his teammates can coax a bit more fire out of Lawrence mid-game or if the Jacksonville quarterback will always be a cool customer — at the cost of some verbal barbs during a game.
