San Francisco quarterback Trey Lance was carted off the field in the first quarter on Sunday afternoon after suffering a brutal injury to his right ankle against the Seattle Seahawks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. NFL RedZone’s Scott Hanson reported on the RedZone television broadcast that Lance was officially ruled out of the rest of Sunday’s game.

Here is the video of the injury, which happened on a zone-read running play late in the first quarter.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Twitter that Lance had his leg in an air cast as he was being carted off the field. It was only his third career start in the National Football League. Following the game on Sunday, multiple reports said that Lance had suffered a fractured right ankle, according to his head coach Kyle Shanahan. He will have surgery to repair the injury on Monday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. His 2022 season is likely finished. In the meantime, 49ers backup signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo is now the starting quarterback for San Francisco.

San Francisco had high hopes for Lance after selecting him with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. This offseason had been full of plenty of drama for the 49ers, as head coach Kyle Shanahan had decided to move on from Garoppolo and named Lance the starting quarterback heading into the 2022 NFL season. They decided to keep Garoppolo in the fold since they couldn’t find any teams that wanted to trade for him in the offseason.

Lance was seen as an exciting prospect with plenty of tools and upside in the 2021 NFL Draft coming out of North Dakota State. During the 2019 season with the Bison, he threw for 2,786 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. As a runner, he ran for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He won numerous accolades with the FCS powerhouse throughout his prolific career there, including the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game’s Most Outstanding Player.

According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2018 cycle, Lance was rated a three-star prospect and the No. 108 quarterback in America.
