Trey Sermon had just two carries last season for the Philadelphia Eagles but that did not prevent head coach Nick Sirianni raving about the former Ohio State and Oklahoma running back.

Sermon was mostly inactive on game day last year as the Eagles made it to Super Bowl LVII. But with Miles Sanders off to the Panthers, there might be a better opportunity for Sermon to fit into the rotation.

Sirianni certainly seemed excited.

“Trey Sermon, I’m really excited about him,” Sirianni told reporters covering the league meetings at the Phoenix Biltmore Hotel, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Trey didn’t get an opportunity to showcase his talents except for that game against Jacksonville …

“But I can’t tell you how many times at practice he made a cut or you just saw him in his pads or he made a play on a screen or whatever it was and you’re like, ‘Man, this guy has a chance to be really good.’”

Sermon played a bit more in 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers. He had 41 carries for 167 yards, one touchdown, three catches and 26 receiving yards.

Trey Sermon hyped up by Nick Sirianni

Sermon had to compete with Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott for carries in 2022. It just didn’t work out.

“Wish we could have gotten him touches,” Sirianni said. “But we couldn’t do it last year.”

Gainwell and Scott are back in 2023, as well as free agent signing Rashaad Penny. If Penny is healthy, that could be a big steal for Philadelphia after he flashed in Seattle.

Safe to say, Sermon still has to fight for carries but the comments from Sirianni bode well.

“We feel really good about the room as it is right now,” Sirianni said, also alluding to questions about Ezekiel Elliott’s interest in the Eagles. “I’m really excited about that room, really excited about the guys we have in that room.”

Sermon played three seasons at Oklahoma before his final year at Ohio State in 2020. He broke out in the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern, putting him into superstar territory.

Overall, Sermon finished with 455 carries, 2,964 yards, 26 touchdowns, 6.5 yards per carry, 48 catches, 486 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions in his college career.
